About Platform Open Cluster Stack 5 (OCS)

Platform OCS 5 is a complete GPL v2.0 High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster Software stack in one package. Using Platform OCS 5 it is very easy to install, build and manage a HPC cluster of Linux(r) machines. Platform OCS 5 is not a single piece of software but a collection of many components that form 'HPC Software Stack'.

Platform OCS is a Hybrid Open Source and Proprietary software stack. All of the core components of Platform OCS are Open Source and Licensed under GPL or sometimes BSD licenses. Additional optional add-on components can have any license. This hybrid model allows our users to build a HPC cluster from completely Open Source components or a mixture of Open Source and proprietary components.

There are many tools and applications in the Open Source Community that can be used to build a HPC cluster. An experienced Linux Administrator should be able to find all of the compilers, debuggers, MPI libraries, batch systems, etc. and create a cluster from them; but what about everyone else who does not have Linux Administration experience? That is one of the problems that Platform OCS 5 solves. It is easy for scientists, engineers, hobbyists, high school students, basically anyone with some Linux(r) experience to create their own 'Personal Supercomputer' out of a bunch of machines. The Platform OCS team has spent years stitching together, building and testing all of the components necessary, so that "you don't have to do it".

The Software Stack diagram below lists all of the typical components in a Platform OCS 5 cluster (typical but not all of the components).

Development Update

The OCS team has been busy this year. Project Kusu http://www.osgdc.org is the new foundation for Platform OCS 5. It is a completely Open Source GPL v2 licensed project for building HPC clusters. The Platform OCS team and the Kusu team have been working very hard on Project Kusu and in Parallel the OCS team is busy porting all of the existing components in the Software Stack to the new Kusu architecture.

Platform OCS 5 Documentation

The documents below explain how to get a cluster installed and configured with Platform OCS 5. This is not the complete documentation but enough to get started.

  1. Creating an Installer Node
  2. Adding Kits to an Installer Node
  3. Adding hosts to a Node Group
  4. Moving hosts between node groups
  5. Creating Diskless nodes
  6. Updating a Repository
  7. Creating a new Repository
  8. Associating Kit components to node groups
  9. Notes for installing in VMWare
